Roy Petley

Roy Petley was born 3rd April 1950 in Grantham Lincolnshire, at 5 years old he was left at a childrens home in Uckfield Sussex, to escape his rough surroundings he began to draw and paint.
At 16 he received a scholarship at Brighton university but stayed for only 1 semester and traveled to Italy working at Uffizi Gallery and Pallazzo Pitti.
After one year he returned firstly to Belfast then on to London where he Exhibited his paintings in galleries and shops including Liberty and Heals.
At 21 he used the railings of Green Park in London which where know as “the open air art show” It was here he caught the eye of American dealers who where to become his constant patrons, it was also when the Duchess of Kent took an interest in his work leading to the Queen Mother sending a member of staff to look at Petley’s work who returned with a portrait of Prince Charles, Petley was summoned to the Queen Mothers presence and commissions followed from both the Duchess and Queen Mother, this lead to a long standing friendship with the Royal Family.
Petley spent some years in Norfolk painting the beaches and surrounding areas, he along with his son established Petley Fine Art in 2003 and opened there second gallery in Monte Carlo in 2004.
